Lodge Brothers of Woking conducted the funeral on Friday 31st January, of actor and Woking resident, Joseph Greig who died aged 91.

Mr Greig appeared in many 1960s television programmes such as Z Cars, The Saint, The Baron, The Avengers and Dixon of Dock Green.  He also appeared in The Onedin Line playing Captain Baldwin, and played Guideon in the 1996 film ‘Loch Ness’.

In ‘Dr Who’, Mr Greig played a Sensorite to William Hartnell’s Doctor in the first series adventure broadcast in 1964.  Sadly, due to ill health he was not able to attend the programme’s Fiftieth Anniversary Celebrations last year.

He holds the distinction of being the very first monster-playing actor to speak his own lines.  Until then, the monster’s voice was supplied by another actor voicing the part.  Mr Greig was interviewed in the Reeltime Pictures Production ‘I Was A Doctor Who Monster!’.

Mr Greig’s wife, Eileen predeceased him.  He leaves three sons: Robert, Andrew and Neil,  grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

(An obituary article on the late Mr Grieg appeared in the Surrey Advertiser 31st January 2014)
